Department Of Hematology And CHMO – PGIMER, Chandigarh

Department of Hematology Training & Courses

Courses Offered

The department has been offering a 3-year super-speciality D.M. programme in Haematopathology since July 2011. It attracts highly motivated and talented post-MD/DNB (Pathology) trainees, who rotate through various routine as well as state-of-the-art laboratories and in clinical postings. These academic (D.M.) senior residents complete a thesis-based research project and avail a 2-month out-posting at any advanced centre of their choice. Alumni of this programme have been highly placed as faculty in AIIMS (New Delhi), PGI (Chandigarh), TMH (Mumbai) as well as several prominent medical colleges and leading corporate hospitals.

The DM Haematopathology academic curriculum is integrated with the DM Clinical Haematology programme (conducted by the Department of Clinical Haematology and Medical Oncology) with reciprocal rotations. The Haematology department, the Department of Clinical Haematology and Medical Oncology and the Pediatric Haematology-Oncology Unit (Department of Pediatric Medicine) conduct combined and individual sessions for their trainees to produce well-rounded super-specialist doctors in various sub-sections of haematology.

The Department of Haematology is an integral part of PGIMER’s renowned M.D. Pathology programme. Junior resident doctors pursuing M.D. Pathology rotate through the Haematology Department for a total of 11 months receiving rigorous Haematology training. Many also choose to pursue their M.D. thesis research projects under the guidance of the haematology faculty.

A Ph.D. programme is active in the department, and past doctoral candidates have made a name for themselves in India and abroad.

The M.Sc. Medical Technology (Haematology) course was started in 2010 for advanced training in medical laboratory sciences. The department also makes major contributions to the B.Sc. M.L.T. course.

The Department frequently hosts short-term and long-term trainees, observers and visitors from India and abroad in one or more specialized laboratories. Distinguished visitors and visiting professors are frequently invited to speak on their niche areas of interest and to interact with trainees.
